The lesson I learned is to blot any excess lube before the first ride after lubing. Even if my pants are not afraid of being stained, I often found my hands and sleeves stained by lube after locking my bike with a chain/U-lock going through rear wheel under the drive chain.

On the other hand, we see those videos of Amsterdam folks riding to work in their nice formal long wool coats and suits... It's like taking a walk, unlike in the U.S. (or perhaps only in NYC?), the typical bike commuter looks like going to/returning from a battlefield, in perhaps his worst clothing so as to afford getting dirty and sweaty.
