What you did was actually what I was planning on doing. The reason I went further is because I wanted to be able to take the mitts off easily if it got warm if I made only a small hole that the mirror stem could come out of, I'd need to take off the mirror everytime I wanted to put on/remove the mitt.

The one thing that I'll point out is that where I was planning on putting the hole (in the corner) isn't actually where I would have wanted the hole (which is several inches from the corner).

I hadn't thought about it, but you're right. Because I've got mirrors sticking out, it means the mitts are much more likely to stay in place.
