My bike with the bar mitts has studded tires on it, so it only gets used in the cold. My solution would not work for a bike I regularly wanted to remove the bar mitts. I take the mirror off whenever I need to re-cable the bike and that's it.

And yes, I had to put my hands in, figure out where the hole should be and put it there. It was several inches back from the corner.
