I might try wax. Riding in the rain (rare for me) and after cleaning, the chain looks clean but sounds like it's lubed with sand.
I'm pretty sure my attempt at cleaning just drove the grit into the rollers.

I am thinking of boiling it in hot water and go for a wd40 and then wax dip... i don't mind rain but man, what a chore to clean the chain!
