The borders here are relatively strict. On my weekend trip to Switzerland from Germany, they we're stopping all cars at the Swiss border and requesting ID. This was on a major Autobahn (A5 from Franfurkt to Basel) at 1am on a Friday night/Saturday morning.
I live in France but work in Switzerland, so I cross the border twice per day from the France side. Only the major roads have checkpoints. On my bike route, there are no border patrols. In some places, one side of the street is France and the other side is Switzerland. You wouldn't know it, except for the change in road signs and license plates.
