I choose my bar/bike depending on distance. Most of my commutes and utility rides are under 5 miles so I use a bike with an upright position and North road style bars.
I like drop bars too. There's a reason you see them on touring bikes- multiple hand positions, making it easier on long rides. You don't have to crank them all the way down so you're bent double.
Anything beats flat bars IMO. North road bars are great for general riding around, and you can also grab the front curves or the middle section to beat the wind.
