This is the problem with steel frames (
been there, done that). On an aluminum frame, the derailleur hanger would have broken off and the derailleur itself might have survived. At the race aggiegrads mentioned I saw a brand new carbon frame with a chunk taken out of the chain stay where the derailleur hit it.
