anza would involve a slight amount of backtracking. hopefully, they opt for the more straightforward route through d-town hemet and the beautiful climb of the 74 up to the 243. after that, could care less if they descend into palm desert or banning. the banning option involves another thousand feet of climbing, would be longer and slightly more scenic.
It has to be Palm Desert, there are no good cycling-friendly routes between Banning and Palm Springs.
They'll probably want to go through Temecula Wine Country. Murrieta to Temecula to Hemet to Palm Desert To Palm Springs: around 100 miles and 7200 feet of elevation gain (none particularly steep). Murrieta to Temecula to Anza to Palm Desert to Palm Springs: 90 miles and 7100 feet of elevation gain.
