It has to be Palm Desert, there are no good cycling-friendly routes between Banning and Palm Springs.

They'll probably want to go through Temecula Wine Country. Murrieta to Temecula to Hemet to Palm Desert To Palm Springs: around 100 miles and 7200 feet of elevation gain (none particularly steep). Murrieta to Temecula to Anza to Palm Desert to Palm Springs: 90 miles and 7100 feet of elevation gain.
