As I have repeatedly described, motoring in the older European cities is very inconvenient. Your car is stored away from where you live, so you have to walk to it. Then driving to near your destination is slow. And when you near your destination there's no parking slot for it, so you have to park elsewhere and walk again. I have written this repeatedly. In the pre-motoring days people made those trips by walking, and today they probably wouldn't make them by motoring, because of the inconveniences incurred. So the competition is more between walking and cycling than between cycling and motoring, though, for some trips, the latter is the relevant competition.
