The Japanese were using robotic brazing machines. I dont compare them to handmade european bikes. It was a technology advancement for sure, but the hand built bikes are a breed all their own.
To me the japan built bikes of the 80's are bland. They have an artificial look to them. I prefer a few blemishes, a few quirks, a file mark a brazing spatter. Its what makes a bike real and shows its made by a human not pumped out by robots.

While I'm not adverse to finely-finished details on a frame, the imperfections on my boom-era European bikes do not detract from their appeal at all. I've come to appreciate that each one is an individual.
Case in point: My Gitane Champion du Monde.
