I'm betting the OP won't achieve enough altitude to be fatal, so I think the Darwin award is out. It seems rather ambitious to think that one individual, and a budget of 2k, could make an HPA, given that the need to keep it very light weight would appear to require a lot of expensive materials.
Perhaps the OP has watched a few too many reruns of Flight of the Phoenix.
