My pedals hang vertically and slightly tilted forwards with the clipless part of the pedal facing the back. I just push forward on the leading edge of the pedal with my toe and then click in. I don't look down.
If I happen to screw up and end up on the platform side it's not a big deal. The platform is open in the middle which accommodates the cleat so my foot sits flat on the pedal. It's just like riding on platforms at that point.
When it's convenient, I'll flip the pedal and clip in.
Note: Before the pedals were broken in they tended to hang which ever way I had left them.
