Thanks for all your input! Even if the above combinations don't work out for my commute, I'm sure I'll be using them for recreational cycling, and probably for some light touring next spring too!

Edit: I've just found the following shoes here in Athens, and they seem to look comfortable and should be easy to walk around without damaging the floor surface at my work; does anyone have these or know of them?

I agree, alot of experienced users here with good info. Maybe I'll try a set of those double sided clip on any side type so it won't matter how its positioned.
