New Commuter buying first commuter bike--a few questions
My commute is 10 miles roundtrip, with a bit of a slow climb as I arrive to work. About 90% of the ride is on bike trails which are plowed in winter (I'm told.) I live in southern Wisconsin, unfortunately the winters have been mild lately, so I expect to ride in snow. Realistically, I'll ride 3-4 times a week due to other commitments.
The bike. I'm strongly leaning toward internal hub and disc brakes--I don't want to be stopped by rain or snow. (Could still be talked out of them though.) I found a 'new' 2010 Raleigh Detour Deluxe for $675 at an old venerable bike shop. Gave it a test run and liked it. Tried a 2010 Trek Soho, but didn't like the brakes, in fact they were awful. If I went to a 2013 Raleigh Detour Deluxe it would be $1100. I don't know the relative quality of bike parts----I don't know if there's a significant difference between the bikes. I will pay more for ride, reliability, and safety.
Am I missing some obvious other bike options? I don't like putting a lot of time into maintenance, so I thought the internal hubs were the answer---do they save a lot of time and hassle?
Thanks!
