The US is getting older, while there is a very pronounced "youth bulge" in much of the third world.

Another factor to consider is the number of <50 respondents. A reasonable assumption (that would have to be tested of course), is that most respondents in this particular forum would be the ones it is aimed at, i.e. 50 plusers. The 50-54 demographic in BF may consist of a fair amount in that age group who are putting off admitting to it, therefore, not visiting 50+ until they are ready to own up to it.
OTOH, and seriously, I would have expected much more of a drop off associated with age after 50 - death, morbidity, loss of interest. One take would be that, for whatever reason, the 50+ is not attracting the 50-54 cohort (as you implied above).
