They tell me there are soap-based greases that are appropriate for bearing use, that won't allow gear oil to seep through... but I don't remember where I learned this. Bikesmith, maybe?

In any event, I think the plan's a good one. Get on the UK eBay page and see about getting an alloy shell, that'll save you a quarter pound or so...
