I get what you are saying with track gears, but moving a spoke magnet a smidge is pretty quick and easy to do if you want to combine the cadence and speed unit.

I use pedal spindle magnets. As long as you have steel pedal spindles it works quite well. But avoid the overpriced 'cycling' magnets. You can by generic neodymium magnets that are the same thing.
