Op and dgilber, you guys are also describing the exact bike that I have. I purchased my Allez from the original owner about two years ago but prior to that, the bike had been sitting in his garage for at least 15 years. I've been trying to find more information about this bike but until now have been unsuccessful in learning about the year that this bike was made or any other facts about it. It has Tange Prestige Cro-Mo stickers on the fork and frame and is fully outfitted with Dura Ace components including the seatpost and headset. The wheelset is Saturae, which I believe was the in house brand of wheels for Specialized during that era. One interesting feature about my version is that the brake levers have internal cable routing. None of the pictures that I've seen of this bike from that era had internal cable routing. What I'd really love to find out is when and where these bikes were built and the quantity.

The original owner of my bike was an avid bicyclist and had put many miles on this bike. I also plan on doing the same but have had to make a few changes. The saddle and saddle mount on the seatpost was deteriorating so I replaced it with a carbon fiber example and a modern saddle. The brakes don't return to center after stopping so I've temporarily replaced it with an Ultegra 6700 set that wasn't being used, until I find time to disassemble and clean the original brake calipers. Otherwise, I love the way this bike rides. It's a bit heavy but still a great bike that I plan on putting many more miles on. Oh and 12 speeds seems to be enough so far as long as I don't try to climb any of the tougher hills in the SF Bay Area. 20 speeds? Bah!
