Peterson's philosophy, as I understand it, is--for me--refuted by my experience. I used to ride a commuter bike, no special clothes or shoes. After about 30 minutes, my butt would be sore, I'd be unhappy, my clothes would be sweaty, uncomfortable, and flapping in the wind annoyingly. And generally I was either too hot or too cold. As a result, I wouldn't ride very far or very long, and didn't enjoy it all that much.
Now that I ride with bike-specific clothing, shoes and a "fancier" bike, I ride more often, longer, and enjoy it much more.
