Rims are preloaded in compression by the tension in the spokes, and cracks can't really propagate unless the material is in tension some of the time.
I know that rims are under compression, but I've certainly seen rims with cracks that develop and propagate, so it's unlikely to cause a problem but conceivable that a crack could start to develop...something to keep an eye on.
