Just curious... Do you at least use Kool Stop salmon pads? Even in the sand they might help a little bit.
Sounds like a good area to have disc brakes even on road bikes if you tear through rims that fast. I've never personally worn through a rim because I buy and sell bike stuff so quickly, but I have a rim or two now that I can feel the concavity in with my fingers.
