Journalists do any number of stupid things. This is just one of them.
If you get paranoid, you can mount a camcorder on your bike. People have been fired/arrested for irresponsible behavior towards bikes that was caught "on tape". I have one for such an occasion, but I rarely ride with it and since I've bought it I've had 0 run-ins.
