davidmikesell, My experiance is the same as Andy's. The shifter has to "home" into the smallest gear's position to install the cable end properly, if not it can jamb inside. Tension on the cable (not housing) is required if shifting an unconnected shifter w/cable installed. If the shifter won't home, then use the picks, which are available at auto parts stores, hardware stores and etc., to dislodge the cable end from whatever it's caught upon.

I have disassembled a 600 integrated shifter, but I'm the first to admit that it was just dumb luck it worked after reassembly.
