Here's a little info if you have time to help out:

I'm 350+ pounds, 6' 0" tall.
I'll be riding on the streets, but would like to be able to ride grassy trails - Or should I forget the light trails for now?
Would I be better off with a Mountain style bike or a "10 speed" style bike? (That's all I know about bikes... mountain or "10 speed").
Are there any upgrades that are definitely necessary considering my weight?
Any ideas for me? My bike MUST come in under $500, or I'm out of luck.

Thanks for ANY guidance you might offer!

Look for a mountain bike, either new or used. One without suspension is best - in other words, no 'shock absorbers' in the fork or seatpost. At your weight you would keep a suspension seatpost compressed anyway. A mountain bike is designed for 'abuse' and usually the wheels are pretty sturdy. Its the wheels that will be the weak point for you - look up some basic bike maintenance online and learn how to do things like repair a flat, adjust brakes, keep the wheels in true, etc.

Manufacturers to consider are Kona, Trek, Specialized..... the Specialized Hardrock was once the 'house bike' around here, as it was recommended whenever such questions were asked, and we had several posters riding them.

Leave aside money for a helmet - a Bell from Walmart is fine. Expect to have soreness at first, especially at points of contact - hands, feet, and butt. At some point if discomfort continues you might want to consider gloves and cycling shorts. If you think the Show Me State isn't ready to see you in bike shorts many guys wear gym shorts over the lycra.
