I came and asked the same questions you are asking back in 2009. Got great info back then, just like you are getting now. My first bike was a 2010 Giant Suede DX - 26" wheels, with a front shock (it worked for me, and I rode rail trails mostly). Rear wheel died at around 400 miles, was replaced FREE by my LBS (Local Bike Store). Fast forward to now, I weigh bout 296lbs, and now am riding a recumbent trike which I just love.
