I would recommend getting the widest tire you can with hard side walls to allow you to run lower psi so the tires "float" rather then dig in if it is deep sand and gravel. If it is not very deep then a thinner tire with a higher psi will allow you to dig in so the tire can get a grip on the hard pack underneath.

As allways I would suggest a Nokian NBX tire. I have found it to be the best all-around tire that works great in soft conditions.
