All people are not the same. There are cultural and societal differences between individuals and between areas of the world, or even within countries. It doesn't take very much observation to see the differences.
Some people self-select to warm climates and think those who choose to live in cold climates to be nuts, or at least touched. Some people are more aggressive and some are not. Today, for example, large numbers of people migrate to the USA even though their route is full of hazards while others stay at home in poverty and oppression. It is obvious those who migrate are bolder, more aggressive and willing to take more risk in breaking out of the status quo. That is self-selection.
People who voluntarily left the Old Country, whether that be Europe, Asia, or wherever had different personalities and attitudes than those who stayed subservient to the government that restricted their economic and personal freedom. That, my friend, is self-selection. That self-selection continues today. My hope is that it will continue because that will bring the best to this country and insure its' long term viability.
All people are not equal. That is a fact. Where it becomes bias and bigotry is when that is used as an excuse for not providing equal opportunity.
Nope, this is not some weird political philosophy, it is just a modern reflection of what has gone on for most of history.
