European cities are more livable, because they were designed for people, instead of designed for automobiles. If you want to see examples of this, without a passport, pick an older North American city, where it was primarily designed in the 19th century, New York, Toronto, Montreal and Chicago are all good examples, older areas have a more European livability because they are designed around people, not cars.

On our North Side we even have a nice park next to a residential neighborhood -- it's where they used to let the animals graze.
But, the houses all had narrow fronts and so they packed a lot of them into a block. That was so people were able to walk to where they needed to go which they had to do -- because that's how that got where they were going. Plus you can see where the old mom & pop grocery stores were -- right in the middle of the residential neighborhood.
Basically, people simply walked a lot so the neighborhoods were built to accommodate that...
