+1 on the ghost shifting likely being the result of a worn freewheel and chain. You can pic up basic modern chain and ramped 6/7 speed freewheel for around $20-30 online most of the guys here including me like the the inexpensive Sunrace freewheels and and KMC chains. Some other good basic upgrades are new cables and housing about $15 and decent new tires about $12-20 a peice, new brake pads around $10 new bearings and grease $5-10 just mostly labor.
