If you have tread, I believe there is less rubber touching the ground. The reason car tires have treads is to push the water out of the way so they don't hydroplane, but bikes don't hydroplane.

Sheldon explains this pretty well. And you can't argue with a dead guy (it's not that he has to be right, but clearly arguing with him won't work ).
