+2 Considering the budget the OP is looking at they shouldn't have a any trouble picking a real nice whole bike of CL or even from a local dealer or LBS. As said nicer vintage stuff does tend to sit around linger for fairly long periods on CL and in shops. When you start to get in the $1000-1500 price range you can find a lot of bike. It isn't uncommon to find a nicer lesser known 80's road bike with a Columbus framset, full Campy SR/NR and a nice wheelset for under a $1000 in a shop and sometime close to half of that off CL.
