I'm lucky that I have access to a locked courtyard with a bike rack to put my bike in. Very few people have access to it and it's patrolled regularly by security...but I still lock it up like Fort Knox every time.
Years ago, I found a wallet on the ground with nearly $400 in cash (this was in the '70s so that was a lot of cash) and an ID card: the person worked at a nearby factory. I took it to the security box (because I wasn't allowed to go further) and was told that the wallet would get to the owner. Yes, I was a naive teenager and I'm sure that the wallet reached the owner but I'm also sure that the money didn't. Security officers are no less tempted than the rest of us, lock your bike.
