To be fair, OP didn't ask about training and I don't see anything here about using average speed as a training metric. He was curious about how fast people go, and how far - and I think it's a very natural question. I appreciate the people who answered him seriously without rancor.
I'm not talking about training either, except tangentially. I was specifically addressing the idea of using it for internet comparisons. I agree it's a natural question, which is why it comes up so often, but it isn't a very good one.
