I grew up riding those Varsities. They were tanks. I have had awesome wipeouts on them, and you just get back on and ride away. One time I hit a curb head on going at least 25 mph and just totally ate it in most spectacular fashion, literally stopped traffic. I thought for sure the bike was toast. It was fine.
Back then we didn't wear no helmunts neither and mah brane never got no damidges.
I'm sure the varsity was fine! Lot's of people like to rag on them because they literally weigh 40+ lbs. Plus there are a ton of them around. But they really are pretty cool. All the chrome makes them look great which is a good reason for somebody who cares about aesthetics to like them. And if somebody's ever taken one apart they would be lying if they said the things weren't well built. They also ride pretty dang nice when they are well maintained. I took mine on some pretty long rides before I sold it and I had a blast. Even on some big climbs it cruised right up. I do wish I could have kept it.
