You shouldn't be listening for clicks, you should be watching for cable and derailleur movement. Disconnect the cable from the derailleur and work the shifter while holding the cable where it goes into the lever. If the cable moves, you haven't broken anything.

Please refer to one of the online guides (youtube or Park Tools) before trying to do this again. You really just need enough cable tension to lift the chain onto the big ring with 0.5-1,0 mm clearance between the chain and outer plate. You want the derailleur to lightly kiss the limit screw when the lever ratchets up to the big ring. Think butterfly kiss, not deep thrust.
