This probably has more to do with different societal priorities. We're so focused on the individual being the most important thing, that we've become selfish, to the detriment of our relationships with mates and the community at large. Entitlement isn't just a handout, it's infected everyone of every social class. There's no compromise. Or at least that's my theory.

That all said, I don't think someone should stay in a ****ty relationship purely out of a sense of duty.
