Thanks for all the help.
I've put over 1000 miles on the Candy C pedals on my roadie since late April, including my first century this weekend. The pedals cost me about $55 new on eBay. For another $50, I got a pair of Specialized Road Comp shoes (eBay again). They've performed well, just like the Crank Bros. Mallet C's I put on my hybrid last year. I like the amount of float--easy on the old knees.

I may eventually switch over to Speedplays or Looks for the road bike, but I'm fairly content right now with my pedal set up.

I'm figuring that, if you spend just a little more than what the el-cheapo stuff would cost you, you can have decent (but not top-of-the-line) equipment that works well and will last. It's well worth it if you ride frequently.

You can get plastic platforms that clip onto the Crank Bros. pedals (eggbeaters, candy, etc.) if you want to use tennis shoes.
