At the risk of sounding like a shill (there are at least 4 threads with light/fast cross bikes in the $1500 and up range), I find it very difficult to see a better deal than this, if your size is available: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/..._pro_ti_xi.htm It has the utility you seek (rack/fender mounts, disc ready), is very light, and well equipped.

Otherwise, the ones already mentioned are all very fine bicycles, but there is something compelling to me about the fact that titanium and a demonstrably better component package is available for just a hair over your target budget.
