In other markets they call Hybrids, Cross bikes wheel mid width, 700c. just straight bars instead of drop bars.

Once again? what brands are carried by your LBS? buy local gains you in service, after the sale.
as a commuter , i say the cheaper one as wearing drivetrain parts is a given
repair/ consumable, parts of 8 speed is less than 10 are ..
like expensive stuff, the other one has those.
