I had it the other way. Both my dogs were about 11 or 12 years old, big dogs too, and one night I found the female had died while we were out of the house. Her health had been declining but it didn't seem like she was going to die so soon
The male's health quickly deteriorated after that. He gained a lot of weight and developed a tumor by his jaw. I was more devastated by having to put him down than finding the other one dead. This was 7 years ago and I still think of them. I did grow up with them after all.
