If it was my money, I'd get a titanium cross from Bikesdirect. Super light, very nice frame, and well equipped for not much more than the ones you mention. Disc ready (Less than $150 to swap to BB7), rack/fender mounts, and pretty dead sexy for the money, IMO. http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/..._pro_ti_xi.htm

Otherwise, Volagi seems to be gaining momentum in the realm of versatile, sporty bikes.
+1

I just asked a very similar question myself essentially with a slightly longer commute but equally fast bike requirement: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...cs-reqs-inside

I got the same lame German advice (BTW I'm from Europe originally) you did and it was partially my fault as I didn't really specify what I was looking for. But I also got the same bikesdirect advice and the Volagi advice which were quite honestly the two best bikes I could have sourced.

The Volagi Viaje SL and the Fantom Cross Team Titanium from BikesDirect are on the top of my list.
