I guess my patience level was low and I responded with, "Yea, that's a shame. I've known about a dozen people who were killed driving cars."
It probably didn't change his feelings or thoughts about cycling, but it did seem to end his desire to come and lecture me about it.
This is exactly what I'm bothered by. People just accept that its OK to die in a car wreck vs dying in some other way.

I've been hit by a car too, not severely, and luckily I walked away with a mangled up bike and (unfortunately) sweet eff all from the authorities.

I didn't spend the night regretting my decision to ride or festering about the injustice of the situation. I spent the night gutting my destroyed bike and building up another frame I had lying around so I could be able to ride the next day.
