I don't really have a dog in this fight, but you could try some of those chrome shoes that are on sale right now. They make them SPD compatible and if you decide not to ride clipped in you can take the SPD's off and still have a great pair (so I've heard) of around town/ toe clip shoes without breaking the bank...
