Same thing when approaching a downhill if im in the middle ring, shifting right up to the big ring might be too much gear but if I simultaneously shift to a bigger cog in the rear, I'm still at a smooth cadence.
this is exactly what I am trying to describe, I do this all the time with my 9 speed triple, and exactly why I like it. Its fast, usually one quick shift at the rear along with the chainring change and bingo, as you say, your cadence is good and you just have to dingle up or down the cassette. And from my experience with the Tiagra fd, it shifts great and is consistently great on a triple, so I cant complain ever with shifting.
