I got the scares for winter cycling when once my CX bike with cantis decided it didn't want to brake. Almost snapped the brake cable that time.
Now I've got a MTB for winter riding and the disc brakes are doing a fantastic job. Got some water or ice on the discs and it's taking away your precious braking power? No problem! just feather the brakes until hot and you are good to go again.
Can't see that happening with rim brakes.
