You guys must be doing something wrong. Our start sequence is dictated by my stoker signaling that she's clipped in, often its getting whacked in the shin when she's clipping in that does it ("oh, sorry, I'm in"). I never start until I get the ok signal, plus we use the stoker accelerate method to start where I make one down-stroke to get up on the saddle while she powers us up to a stable speed until I can clip in.
