Yes, they should have been on the other side of the road, but you should have let them know you were approaching, and I don't see what their weight has to do with any of it.
Many people are un educated about the signals us riders tend to use. Chances are some oen who is obese is new to walking rideing etc and wont know the correct reaction. I always say "passing on your left" Its more obvious and less likly to result in them suddenly moveing to their left. Pedestrians and young kids need to learn what side of the road is the correct side for their form of locomotion. Bikes cars etc in the us use the right lane pedestrians use the left faceing trafic. Bladers boarders etc well i guess it would depend on how fast they are going.
