It's like buying a car without leaving the showroom. You take your chances if you haven't had a real world road test. Really though, even the 5 to 15 minute test rides you get at most LBSs give you very limited information. Fit, comfort and performance issues often don't show up until you've got some real miles in the saddle, so there is also the probability that a new bike will take some tweeking.
