You might want to think of an alternative... buy a bikefriday or similar type bike that can be transported as regular luggage (no excess fees on the airline--which can be to the tune of $150 each way), and rent the smallest car they have (well...maybe not the SMART, but almost anything else). That way you save money on the rental, you save money on fuel, as it costs less to run a smaller car, and you save money on transport costs of the bike. You will pay for a new friday in 4-5 trips on airline fees alone. The downside...well, a friday is not quite as fast as a road bike, although they are pretty good. You look funny on a small wheel bike, but it will allow you to do just about everything you want.

I have traveled with a dahon Speed P8, which I recently replaced with a bikefriday new world tourist.
