I second the Ford Focus wagon. While in Italy we used one to transport 4 boxed bikes in the back. Don't ask where we put the two additional riders.
And once out of the box, we put two in the back and three more on the trunk rack one of brought in our bike box. 5 people and all of our cycling gear were then packed into the car. It was a very tight fit, but OK for a short drive. At least it was for me, I was driving. The rest of the guys were packed in like sardines. Ha!
